The U-14 2008 edition wasted no time to make its presence felt. A strong work ethic and a winning attitude earned the kids a well deserved championship at the Frank Sobil’s Classic held in Oshawa on May 10th and 11th. The Lightning won four decisive games to get to the final where they held on to a nail-biting scoreless draw through regular time and two overtime periods. Superb goalkeeping clinched the championship in the second set of penalty kicks. Alex Tashos was named the team’s MVP, a well-deserved award.

The Lightning also had a good showing at the Niagara Invitational tournament held the week before. They made it to the second round and greatly improved their goals for-against performance. The boys had a great time at this out-of-town event and got to know each other better at a team dinner.

Of course, these important outings do not come free and the team wishes to acknowledge our sponsors Dymin Steel, Pittsburgh Steel Group, Dawes Resaw and Tower Steel for their generous support.

The boys played hard as a team and persevered through the rain and cold conditions to capture the West Niagara Tournament Championship. This was the first 2008 Outdoor tournament for the boys in what will be a busy season. The boys displayed excellent skills, team work, and determination on their way to the Championship.  It was a long, tiring 2 days of soccer, but the boys’ hard work, fitness training, and motivation to succeed, served them well.
