The Girls represented the Markham Soccer Club proudly & overcame much adversity on their way to becoming the Whitby Tournament Champions! This group of Champions played 6 games in two days with an injury laden squad and short bench.  The girls battled through weather conditions, injuries, exhaustion, a tough draw, penalty shots and extra time on their way to becoming champions.  An exciting two days that concluded with a semi final game that ended with penalty shots & final game victory that ended in extra time, well done team!

This Championship was truly a "Team Victory" ... the Coaching staff is extremely proud of your achievement!

U10 Girls Make Henderson Tournament Final

Under picture perfect skies and on a hard baked bumpy pitch, the U10 Girls played Burlington in the final of the prestigious Henderson tournament in London on labour day. Simply said, the girls lost 5-1 but that doesn't tell even half the story.

On Saturday, the girls kicked off their campaign with a thumping 7-0 win over London Dragons under a broiling lunchtime sun and followed that up with a hard fought 1-0 win over Burlington Express in the afternoon. Back
at it on Sunday and under an equally scorching sun, the Lightning girls scored consecutive 4-0 wins over North London Supersonics in the morning and Windsor Wolves at lunchtime leaving them top of their group and earning a place in the semi's as top qualifier.

The semi final against Chatham Strikers was fairly comfortable until the Strikers equalized Lightning's early goal just before half time. The second half was tense with chances going begging at both ends, but Lightning looked much more comfortable. Full time came with the scores level at 1-1 and so onto 2 x 10 minute overtime periods played under golden goal rules. Talk about tense!! All the parents were up and pacing as the play went from end to end, hearts in mouths at each Lightning attack and nails shredded with each Chatham counter. 4 minutes into the second period and the decisive move.  Goalie Amber's big drop kick led to a Lightning corner which Natasha hammered off of a Strikers' knee and out for another corner. This time, the corner was perfect, over the goalie's head and there was Korina at the far post to bury the winner. A slight pause and then a roar of relief from the parents and coaches who collectively leaped 100 feet into the air. WOW!

After a night's sleep the girls went into the final in a
buoyant mood, and why not! 5 wins from 5, 17 goals for and only 1 against. Unfortunately, Burlington were a little stronger in the final than in the earlier round, they had 3 more players than Lightning, had played in cooler conditions the day before and didn't have that draining overtime! After a very even first 20 minutes, Burlington had a one-on-one and made it count and followed this up with a chip from outside the area a few minutes later. 5 minutes into the 2nd half and it was 3-0, but the Lightning didn't give up and quickly earned a penalty that Amy hammered in. Sadly, the revival didn't last and Burlington notched a couple of meaningless very late goals to seal it. All over and 2nd place. All in all a wonderful weekend and a tremendous result for the team. Burlington's coach wisely declined a best 2 from 3 rubber and a relieved opposition lifted the enormous trophy!

Huge thanks to coaches Caroline and Greg, manager Chris and players Emily, Rachel, Amy, Natasha, Korina, Erica, Alex, Nicole, Jayden (the final MVP), Amber and Maddison.
