U14 Boys Compete at John Traganitis Tournament

The U-14 boys Markham Hornets All Star team wound up their summer ’08 season at the John Traganitis All Star Tournament in Aurora on Saturday, 13 September. The boys played their first two games to 0-0 draws against Darlington and Stouffville, but lost their final game to a strong Unionville team.

The U-14 Hornets participated in three weekend tournaments, including Unionville and Oshawa, and one Friendly over the summer. The U-14s got off to a somewhat late start for the All-Star program, and did not have too many opportunities to practise and play together. By the last tournament the team was really starting to click.  Coach Steven Swan brought nothing but enthusiasm to all games and practices and the boys enjoyed playing together above and beyond their House League games.

Two All-Star Tournaments Two Trophies for Markham Hornets U10 Boys All-Stars

The U10 Boys All-Stars won the Finalist trophy at the John Traganitis All-Star Tournament last week-end in Aurora, to go along with their Championship trophy at the Unionville Milliken tournament a few weeks earlier. Due to a few cancellations by other cities the boys only got to play in two All-Star tournaments this summer  and came away both times with trophies which made the coaching staff very proud of their drive and tenacity. "It was a very special team" said coach David Matheson Sr., "I've never seen a team with such respect  for each other and overall friendship; it's what made them play so well".
They cruised to three wins in the round-robin; 7-2 over Newmarket, 6-1 over Barrie and 3-1 over Darlington. In the final game against Wexford they lost 5-2 but were the only team to score against Wexford in the tournament.
Congratulations to all the boys and good luck next year. Players: Nicky Turco, David Matheson, Niko Abbott, Chris Christidis, Liam Wraxall, Chris Urqhart, Alex Barovier, Johnny Anagnostopolous, Adam Yoshida, Daniel Calio, Marco Accardo, Felix Cruickshank

Markham Hornets U7 All-Star Team#1 Plays Like Champions

Saturday September 20, 2008 saw the U7 Team #1 All-Stars travel to Whitby for the Whitby Iroquois Soccer Tournament.

The team, comprised of 6- and 7-year-olds, was formed the week before. The team had one practice under the guidance of Tom Gill and Sanford Carabin to show the boys positions, techniques, etc. For many boys, this was their first exposure to a tournament of any kind.

From the beginning, the boys were in tough. Many of the all-star teams had been together all summer and had the luxury of practices together and even had played in tournaments. BUT, as their coach repeatedly told them, “Do not worry, we are the Markham Hornets, and we will do just fine!” With the loudest cheering section of any team there, the boys were ready!

Game #1 saw the host club Whitby Blue provide tough opposition. Whitby scored a quick goal, and then an own goal by the Hornets caused a 2-0 deficit. The boys then turned it on. Half-time came and went and the score was now 3-2 for Whitby. The boys spent the last 10 minutes around the opposition’s goal, but many attempts did not yield the tying goal.

Final Result: Whitby Blue-3 vs Markham Hornets U7 Team #1- 2

Game #2 had the boys firmly believing in themselves and playing their positions. They started quickly and the opposition from St. Catharines was no match for our boys. Goal after goal after goal – the MSC train was rolling! The boys dominated in all aspects and limited the opposition’s scoring chances. Had it not been for some stellar goalkeeping from the other side, the score might have been even higher.

Final Result: Markham Hornets U7 Team #1- 7 vs.  St.Catharines- 0

Game #3 saw Markham Hornets U7 Team #1 up against a team from Kleinberg. This was a tough battle, as teams traded scoring chances and our boys were starting to get tired. As the game progressed, we started to build a lead and had the game in hand leading 5 to 2. Kleinberg scored to make it 5-3 and the game drew closer. Markham adjusted their defense as Kleinberg mounted a late charge in the final minutes, but to no avail.

Final Result: Markham Hornets U7 Team #1- 5 vs. Kleinberg- 3

All the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles that attended were very proud of these young men. Coach Danny enjoyed his day with the boys and “thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it all, and has recuperated from losing his voice!”

The team was comprised of the following boys:

Kaylan Adatia                                               Nicolas Page

Christian Andonovsky                                 Michael Palandra

Andreas Ciano                                              Jevon Peart

David Fiorucci                                              Lucas Pecalevski

Carson Guddat                                              Vincent Servinis

Victor Iacobucci                                           Kobe Smith

Karim Jack                                                    Apaar Vijay

Way to Go Markham 1999 All Star Girls

The Markham U09 Girls All Stars was one of a number of Markham All Star
teams to compete in the Unionville-Milliken Soccer Club annual tournament.

The first game was played against the Desjardins' Dragons who made the trip
from Sudbury. The Dragons opened up quickly with two very early goals.
Markham quickly regained their composure. Francesca Volpe powered a goal
midway in the first half to begin the scare of a comeback. Markham still
trailed going into the second half but it was their half. Markham outplayed
and outshot the Dragons but could not get the equalizer to lose the first
game 2-1.

Playing against West Rouge Storm from Toronto, Markham had
something to prove. The play was fairly even in the first half that ended
0-0. The second half saw Markham start to take the play to West Rouge. Sarah
Fenwick opened the scoring mid way through the second half. With just a
couple of minutes remaining, Rachel Sousa broke in from the left side and
scored the insurance goal as the game ended 2-0 for Markham. The shut-out was shared by Mikayla Ford and Francesca Volpe.

The final game was against the host Unionville-Milliken. It started more than 75 minutes late after its scheduled game time in the afternoon on a hot day. Both teams scrambled throughout the first half but could not get a strong scoring
opportunity. Unionville opened the scoring early in the second half but they
were getting tired with only a couple of extra girls for substitution.
Markham tied the game with close to 5 minutes remaining and that was the way it stood when the final whistle blew. A tie was enough to propel Markham
into the championship game on Sunday against the Desjardins' Dragons.

A new way and a new game under the threat of rain and Markham went onto the field looking for revenge. Markham opened the scoring early in the 1st half
with Caroline Tepelenas kicking the ball in from the right side. Very early
in the second half, Sarah Fenwick increased Markham's lead to 2-0. The
Dragons were not able to mount much offence thanks to Markham's strong
defence. Mikayla Ford and Rachel Souza shared Markham's 2-0 victory shut
out.

Other team members who played their position well all game include
Jamie Atherton, Emily Cramarossa, Breanne Douse, Sarena Henry, Alyssa Irwin,
Paige Kunihiro, Megan Wallenius, Rachel Wilson and Emily Wood who was chosen as the final game MVP. The team was managed by Madelyn Volpe and coached by Robert Henry.

U18 Girls All-Star Team Wins Unionville-Milliken Tournament

The Markham Hornets Girls Under-18 House League All-Star team went undefeated for the second tournament in a row and ended a successful season by winning the Unionville-Milliken SC All-Star/Select Tournament on the August 23-24 week-end. The key to the victory was a rock-solid defence (two goals allowed in five games), outstanding goalkeeping, a few very timely goals (the team only scored three goals in five games), and nerves of steel on crucial penalty kicks.

The Hornets finished the Saturday round robin portion of the tournament with a record of two ties and a win, good for five points and first place in the four-team Group A.

Goalkeeper Bryanna Lundie and her defence were unbeatable in the first game against Scarborough United, but the Hornets had to settle for a 0-0 tie.

Jackie Harris’ goal in the first two minutes of the second game against Unionville-Milliken Select A was enough to ensure victory, as Michelle Kwok kept the shut-out streak alive with some outstanding saves on the rare occasions when the defence allowed an opponent through.

The third game was a battle for first place in the group against Brams United Sting. The Hornets were stung by a quick Brams United goal, barely two minutes after the opening kick-off, but kept applying pressure and were finally rewarded with the tying marker eight minutes before the end of the game when a Justine Cleworth free kick deflected in off an opposing player’s head. The 1-1 tie was enough to ensure top spot in Group A, with the tie-breaker coming down to goals against.

This set up a semi-final match on Sunday against the St. Catharines Jets, the second-place finishers from Group B. Lundie earned her second shut-out of the tournament, but once again her team-mates could not finish off the chances that they managed to produce, so the scoreless tie forced the teams into a nerve-wracking penalty kick shoot-out. St. Catharines jumped into a 2-1 lead after two shooters, with Victoria Christofilos scoring the Markham goal. The Hornets bounced back with goals by Meera Haji and Cleworth while St. Catharines players missed the net with their next two shots. This set the stage for a big save by Lundie, as she got just enough of the ball to deflect it onto the crossbar, thus securing the win and sending the Hornets into the championship final against Unionville-Milliken Select B, winners of Group B and the semi-final match against Brams United.

The championship final was a thrilling roller-coaster ride of emotions that ended in stunning fashion. After a scoreless first half, UMSC shocked Markham with a goal early in the second half, only the second goal allowed in five games. The Hornets pressed hard for the equalizer but seemed destined for the runner-up trophies as the seconds ticked away into injury time. Seconds before the final whistle, Markham was awarded a free kick in the attacking zone, and on the ensuing play, the referee awarded a controversial penalty kick for a hand ball. Under enormous pressure, Haji slotted home the tying goal, and Markham once again faced a penalty kick shoot-out to determine the winner of the match, and the tournament.

Markham jumped into a 1-0 lead after two rounds in the shoot-out, thanks to another goal by Christofilos and two enormous saves by Lundie. UMSC fought back with two goals in the next two rounds, while only Cleworth could score for Markham. The championship was decided in the fifth round, as Harris scored and the UMSC player missed. Andrea Wilson was named the Markham MVP for the championship game.

Other members of the championship team were: Rachel Tam, Jill Kooymans, Alyssa Karpouzis, Michelle Pacelli, Oriana Paoletti, Valerie Belanger, Angela Meli, and Marley Morton. The team was coached by Jerry Kooymans and Adil Wilson, managed by José Rochon and sponsored by CIBC.

U12 Boys All-Star Team - Montreal Lakeshore Soccer Fest - August 16 and 17

Going into the tournament with only nine healthy players, the team's outlook was not promising.  However, the first game on Saturday was a 2 - 0 win over the Cornwall Coyotes.  The second game against the host Lakeshore Strikers resulted in a 2-1 loss.

On Sunday, the boys had reinforcement from a U10 call-up, Nicky Abbott, who helped the still short-handed Hornets win their third round robin game over Pointe-Claire Devils 3-0.

With this second win, the Hornets secured first place in the group and advanced to the final game.   The final was once more against Lakeshore Strikers, and with 10 minutes to go, the Hornets were up 1 - 0.  A valiant effort could not overcome the fresh legs that Lakeshore kept putting on the field and our team wound up losing 2 - 1.

Perhaps the best quote came from one of the field marshals:   "I don't want to know what would happen if you had your full team here..."

The coaching staff all feel nothing but pride for how the boys handled themselves this weekend both on and off the field.  They fought hard, were a force to be reckoned with on the field and were well behaved the whole weekend through (so did the adults!!).    I know I am beaming with pride for all of them and they will carry these memories for years to come.

Coached by Zoran Radonjic and managed by Karl Abbott, team members playing at Montreal were: Austin Altobelli, Matthew Kelly, Luciano Abbott, Keaton Cribbey, Christopher Enright, Veyasan Jeyaratnam, Mario Berardi, Brandon Popalis, Nicholas Abbott and Aleksandar Radonjic.

U11 Girls Finalists at Unionville Milliken All-Star/Select Tournament

What a difference a month can make.  After a slow start at the Newmarket tournament at the start of the season., the U-11 girls Markham Hornets came roaring into the Unionville Select tournament.  A solid effort against East York in their first game led to a back and forth game, with our girls having the majority of the scoring chances.   Markham kept the pressure on but could not overcome losing 2-1.

The last game of the round robin was a tough game against a strong Brampton team.  Both teams played strong at defense and midfield leading to a 0-0 tie.  The four points were enough to get us through to the semi-final game the next day.

In the semis the girls played a very strong and skilled team from Orangeville.   Led by outstanding goaltending and an impenetrable defense, Markham executed the counter attack beautifully and jumped out to a 2-goal lead, stunning the Orangeville team and their supporters.  A late goal by Orangeville kept them in it to the end but there would be no equalizer and on we went to the finals with a 2-1 win.

In the finals it was a back and forth game against a highly skilled more experienced team from Georgetown.  Markham did not back down and stepped it up to come from behind and tie the game 2-2 late in the second half.  The game ended deadlocked at 2 goals apiece so we were on to penalty kicks to decide the championship.  The girls gave it there all but unfortunately Georgetown got the better of us on the penalty kicks 4-3 leading to their 3-2 victory.

I’d like to thank our girls for their hard work and for proving that playing as a team and supporting each other will get you far.  At the trophy presentations the teams were asked to pick a Tournament MVP for the opposing team.  MVP honours as voted by Georgetown went to Laura Davidson for practically being everywhere on the field at all times.  Although Laura was voted MVP I’d like to say that on this day all of our girls were MVP’s and they all played a vital role in the teams success.

Members of the Markham Hornets U-11 girls team for the tournament were: Nadia Boduryan, Christina Cecchini, Laura DaRosa, Laura Davidson, Christina Defranco, Alessia DiMatteo, Cassandra Furgiuele, Kaitlin Kimevski, Lorena Matheson, Rachel O’Donnell, Justine O’Donoghue, Janine Slaman, and Adriana Todorovski.  The team is coached by Denis Cecchini, Mario DiMatteo, and John Slaman.

Adversity Helps Lead Markham U10 Boys to Victory

Playing in searing heat of over 90 degrees they had to play 4 games on the Saturday. They opened with  a very tough fought 1-0 victory over the East York All Stars with the goal scored by mid-fielder David Matheson and solid goaltending by Alex Barovier.

In their second match of the day they cruised to a 6-0 victory over Huntsville with goals by Liam Wraxall 2, David Matheson, Niko Abbott, Chris Urqhart, and Johnny Anagnostopolous.

In their third match of the day they came across a tough team from Pickering who etched out a 1-0 win over our boys despite a general consensus that we outplayed Pickering. This set up an important game against Alliston for the fourth game of the day and a right to move onto the semi-finals on Sunday. They beat Alliston 1-0 on a goal by Nicky Turco and were on their way to a semi-final against Tecumseh on Sunday morning.

This is where adversity started to show it's face against the Markham U10 All Stars as one of their defenders had to be away for the Sunday games. They battled hard but were down 1-0 at the half to Tecumseh. In the second half they came out on fire with David Matheson glancing one off of the crossbar in the first few seconds and three solid shots on goal in the first minute. They kept up the pressure and finally broke through with a goal by Liam Wraxall and then another by Niko Abbott to hang on for the win and another chance to face Pickering in the championship game.

Pickering battled hard in the first half of the final game amassing a 3-1 lead at the half with our goal scored by Niko Abbott. The Markham boys lost another defender at the half due to another engagement and were hard pressed going into the second half. But, once again they came out on fire and scored four more goals in the second half; 3 by Niko Abbott and one by Chris Urqhart, and some incredible goaltending by Alex Barovier to win the championship final 5-3.

Now it's on to Aurora for another tournament on September 13th.

U9 Girls Team – Newmarket Tournament Semi-Finalists
The Markham Under-9 Girls All Star team participated in the 11th Annual Newmarket All-Star Tournament held July 5 and 6. In the first game against the host club, Newmarket, Markham started strong and controlled the play for most of the game. Goals by Breanne Douse and Emily Wood in the first half, followed by Alana Baba in the second half gave Markham a well deserved 3-0 victory. Mikayla Ford and Francesca Volpe shared the shutout. The second game of the day was against Peterborough City White. The play went back and forth without a goal in the first half. Markham played a stronger second half with Caroline Tepelenas breaking the shutout. Emily Cramarossa powered a penalty kick late in the game to seal the 2-0 victory. Mikayla Ford and Rachel Sousa shared the shutout. Game three was against the undefeated Ottawa team who came out strong and opened a 3-goal first half lead. Markham came out in the second half with a higher intensity. Caroline Tepelenas narrowed the lead with her second goal of the tournament. Ottawa finally prevailed by a 4-1 margin. Markham entered into the semi-final on Sunday against a team called “El Salvador” which was actually from Toronto. El Salvador had a strong first half and built a 3-0 lead. Markham had a better second half, but the game ended as 4-0 for El Salvador.

All in all, a great first tournament of the year for the Under-9 Girls. Now on to the Georgetown All-Star tournament July 12-13. (By Robert Henry, coach)

U18 Boys Team – Newmarket Tournament Winners
The Markham Soccer Club Boys Under-18 House League All-Star team staged an upset win in the final of the Newmarket All-Star tournament on Sunday, July 6 with a 2-1 victory over Kitchener.

After a surprisingly easy 5-0 first game win over Darlington in the 3-game round robin, it sort of went downhill from there. They lost their second game against the host team, Newmarket, by a score of 2-1. It was a very close game, but our kids seemed to go to sleep for a bit and then it was too late to come back. The third game was against a very strong Kitchener team which appeared to be toying with our players on their way to an easy 3-0 win. This team was dominating every game at this point and ended the round robin with 3 wins and no losses.

As luck would have it, with our only win, we snuck into the semi-finals to play Mississauga first thing Sunday morning. Our opponents had an amazing goalie who kept them in the game. It was a 1-1 tie going into the second half when we were fortunate to receive a penalty kick. We made good on the shot to send us into the finals...against Kitchener!!

At this point our kids were just thrilled to make it to the finals. Everyone thought they gave it their all and having an entry on the website saying Markham made it to the finals didn't sound that bad. Well, it didn't stop there.

We set the tone early in the match when one of our players stole the ball right from Kitchener's kick-off and drove all the way to the net to manage a corner kick. This was probably the first time we ever broke their strong defence. You could tell it rattled Kitchener's players a bit. Our second accomplishment is that we also scored first. Now the Kitchener players were panicking. They eventually came back to tie the game at 1-1.

Literally with just a couple of minutes left in the game, we got the break we needed and one of our strikers stole the ball, got a couple of strides past their defence and popped it in the net to put us ahead 2-1.   What an unbelievably intense game it was up until now. Kitchener tried everything in the book to get back on us but it was not meant to be.

We won the game and won the tournament with a very exciting finish. Our kids deserved the win by how they played as a team and never gave up. Great weekend, great win.

Contributing to the team's victory were: Steven Aceti, Anthony Addorisio, Jordan Bedi, Justin Barretto, Tom Filgiano, Anthony Karas, Kavi Mistry, Ben Murphy, Kevin Peck, Richard Ruffolo, Juliano Romagnuolo, Daniel Santiani, Kavinda Senanayake, David Slaman, Aaron Styba, Kevin Veneziano. The team was coached by Paul Campbell and John Slaman. By Sam Karas

U18 Girls Team – Newmarket Tournament Semi-Finalists

The Markham Soccer Club Girls Under-18 House League All-Star team launched its season with a commendable performance in the Newmarket All-Star tournament on the July 5-6 week-end, winning two of three round robin games before bowing out in the semi-finals.
The team got off to a great start on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over the host team, followed by a 1-0 win over Unionville-Milliken. Valerie Belanger and Meera Haji scored in the first game, and Jackie Harris scored the lone goal in the second game, while Bryanna Lundie, ably assisted by a strong defence, was unbeatable in goal. Having already secured a spot in the semi-finals, and perhaps feeling the effects of playing two games in warm temperatures with only two subs (and having only one sub for its third game), the team appeared to have a bit of a letdown in the last round robin game, losing to Sarnia 3-0.
The team gave a strong Huntsville team a good battle in their semi-final game on Sunday but ultimately fell short, losing 2-0.

Also contributing to the team's efforts were: Rachel Tam, Justine Cleworth, Kaileigh Macrae, Jill Kooymans, Alyssa Karpouzis, Michelle Kwok, Michelle Pacelli, Oriana Paoletti, Angela Meli, and Marley Morton. The team was coached by Jerry Kooymans and Allister Macrae and is sponsored by CIBC.

U12 Boys Black– Newmarket Tournament Winners
The Markham Hornets 1996 Boys Black Team spent a hot weekend in Newmarket competing in the 11th annual Newmarket All-Star Tournament on July 5 and 6. They finished off the Saturday round robin, winning games against Stouffville 4-0 and Barrie 2-0 and losing to a very strong Clairlea-Westview team 3-1. With this record of 2 wins and 1 loss, the Hornets earned a spot in the semi-final game against an undefeated East York team. In a match played well by both teams, the Hornets come out victorious, 2-0. That set the stage for the championship final game with the Clairlea-Westview team. From the very first whistle, the Hornets displayed superior strength, and there was no doubt who would claim the right to call themselves champions of the 11th Newmarket All-Star Tournament. The final result was a 3-0 Hornets win. Throughout the tournament, the boys played hard, played fair, and they had fun. Coached by Zoran Radonjic and managed by Karl Abbott, members of the Hornets U12 Boys Black Team are: Luciano Abbott, Keaton Cribbey, Adrian Barovier, Michael Dewar, Christopher Enright, Veyasan Jeyaratnam, Cole Kavanagh, Aleksandar Radonjic, Mario Berardi, Brandon Popalis, Bram Bulger, Cameron Stajer, Austin Altobelli, Daniel Blanco, Matthew Kelly and Kegan Blasby.
